UN Young Professionals Programme 2026 | P-2 UN Job Exam, Apply by 30 November
You finished your degree and want to work at the United Nations. However, most UN jobs ask for at least two years of experience, so the door looks closed. The UN Young Professionals Programme 2026 (also called the United Nations Young Professionals Programme, or YPP) is different. It is an entry exam, and you do not need any work experience.
This year, there is only one exam: Development and Sustainability. The UN YPP 2026 deadline is 30 November 2026. Also, the exam is open only to nationals of 47 UN YPP participating countries. Pakistan, India and Nigeria are not on the 2026 list, but the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Afghanistan are.
In this guide, you will find the full country list, the UN YPP 2026 eligibility rules and the UN YPP salary. You will also find the exact steps for your UN Young Professionals Programme 2026 application. We based every fact on the official UN Careers pages and job opening 285586.

UN YPP Salary and Benefits
The YPP is not funding for study. Instead, it can lead to a salaried UN job. According to the official UN Pay and Benefits page, international professional staff get a net base salary plus a “post adjustment”. Post adjustment is a cost-of-living top-up that changes by city.
Benefits
- A real UN career start: Successful candidates who are selected get a two-year fixed-term contract at the start of their professional career with the UN, according to the job opening.
- A UN salary: On the January 2026 UN salary scale, the P-2 net base salary is about USD 56,046 to USD 74,640 a year, before the city top-up. This figure is not confirmed on the official YPP page, so check the official UN salary scale.
- Tax-free pay: The UN Pay and Benefits page says UN salaries are normally exempt from income tax.
- Paid leave: You get 18 to 30 days of annual leave, plus 10 paid UN holidays a year.
- Health insurance: You can join a UN medical insurance plan, and the UN shares the monthly cost with you.
- Pension: You join the UN Joint Staff Pension Fund after six months of service.
- Extra allowances: Depending on your case, you may get a rental subsidy, dependency allowance, education grant for children, travel and shipping costs, and a settling-in grant.
- Room to grow: After two years of good performance, you may get a continuing contract.

What It Does NOT Cover
- It is not a scholarship. It does not pay for any degree, tuition or study.
- Passing does not guarantee a job. Successful candidates go on a roster (a waiting list) for three years, and a job offer depends on open posts.
- You cannot choose your city. You must accept a posting at any UN duty station or field operation.
- It is not open to everyone. If your country is not on the 2026 list, you cannot apply this year.
UN YPP 2026 Participating Countries (Can Pakistan, India or Nigeria Apply?)
Every year, the UN invites countries that have too few staff in the Secretariat. Therefore, the list changes each year. For 2026, the special notice in job opening 285586 lists these 47 countries:
- Middle East and North Africa: Israel, Kuwait, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
- Asia: Afghanistan, Brunei Darussalam, China, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Japan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mongolia, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan
- Africa: Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Sao Tome and Principe
- Europe: Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, San Marino, Slovenia
- Americas and Caribbean: Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, United States of America
- Pacific: Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (Federated States of), Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Vanuatu
So, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Egypt, Bangladesh and Kenya are not eligible in 2026. If you hold dual nationality, note that only the nationality you enter as “Country of Nationality” in Inspira counts.
UN Young Professionals Programme 2026 Eligibility
According to the official job opening, you must meet all of these rules:

- Relevant fields: For example, economics, statistics, data science, social affairs, environment or sustainable development.

- Experience: None needed. However, relevant experience may be used to rank applicants if too many apply from one country.

UN YPP Acceptance Rate: Be Realistic About Your Chances
The UN does not publish an official acceptance rate for YPP. Still, the job opening shows how tight the selection is. If more than 90 people from one country apply for the same exam area, only the top 90 move to the written exam. After that, at most 60 per country can reach the second stage.
Even after you pass every stage, you only join a roster for three years. As a result, a job offer is not guaranteed. Our advice is simple: apply if you are eligible, but prepare seriously and keep applying for other opportunities too.
Required Documents
- Inspira profile: Your name, nationality and contact details.
- Online application form: Your education, skills, languages and any experience. The UN does not accept CVs or resumes instead of this form.

- Degree documents: Your university degree or proof of your qualification.
